7/10/2009
Today more than ever we understand the correlation between the type of life style we embrace and our level of health. In particular, the food we choose to put on our plates or grab when we are in a hurry impacts our health in a significant way.
When it comes to heart disease, there are foods that you can eat that will help you maintain a healthy heart as well as a healthy weight.
For example, spinich and other dark leafy greens are rich in folic acid as well as potassium and fiber. Fish, in particular, salmon and mackeral are excellent sources of Omega-3 fatty acids. Dried beans and peas are rich with potassium, protein and fiber. Fruits such as watermelon and cantelope contain antioxidants as well as potassium and fiber. Choose sweet potatoes because they are high both in vitamin A and potassium. Garlic and onions besides adding great flavor also help lower cholesterol. Milk, the non-fat kind, is an outstanding source of calcium, potassium, and protein.
Did you know that potassium helps control blood pressure? Normal blood pressu4e is 120/80 or below.
Fiber as a regular part of your diet helps lower cholesterol. Your goal should be to raise HDL (good cholesterol) and lower LDL (bad cholesterol.)
Foods such as fish and shellfish, garlic and onions help prevent blood platelets from sticking together.
Our bodies and our health reflect what we eat. What’s on your plate today?
